Requesting Input

After a week of chaos, hundreds of emails, panic, and mourning of the physical loss of Michael, we come together and look towards the future of MJFiction.

Namely, we are looking at ways we can ensure MJFiction can continue to honor Michael's legacy through the distant future. Part of that will entail instituting a number of updates to the site. It's outdated and buggy. We know. These would/could involve the following:

- New appearance

- Reactivating the Registration feature (I can hear everyone who is annoyed with my questions cheering. Sorry, occupational hazard). This will only be possible with the understanding that any duplicates created would result in a permanent ban. That means, if you think you have a previous account, ALWAYS email me at mjf.redone@gmail.com with whatever information you have, so that I can check for you and make sure you don't end up having future problems on the site.

- Fixes of glitches/bugs

- More contests

Part of this would require $$. Having received multiple offers for donations, we are wondering if this would be a feature you would appreciate on the site. All donations would ONLY go back into the site, to ensure that it continues for years and years to come.

Please let us know your thoughts on these ideas and feel free to add your own ideas. I can't guarantee all will be possible; all will be considered.

I'm not up to par with the technical part of an efiction board, but I think more contest, maybe a chatroom (if possible) and the glitches with receiving emails would be good.

- Gabby7 on Jun 25, 2016 09:52 am

Contests and email glitches sound doable :) Thanks Gabby. The chatroom we can't do, simply because of the liability already experienced during the RP mess

I don't know if this feature even exists, but the inability to cut and copy someone's story to prevent stealing of people's stories.  I've see it somewhere (don't remember because I'm old) where if you click to copy it say "sorry you cant do that" (or something like that).  this is the best site going and as we saw with the downtime a lot doesn't need to change.  If it gets too fancy, it's expensive.  Fix what has to be done but if it ain't broke don't fix it so they say.  It's a fan fiction site and not so much a fan site, if people what an all in one shop then they can find that other places.  Let the changes be to improve function and always stay true to the fact it's a fan fiction site.  The goal is love, unity and an outlet to share talents for a person who is dear to us all with respect of him and especially each other and acknowledge that everyone's styles, likes, and talents are different.

I don't believe this is a feature for efiction, particularly as we have the "print story" option. I've seen that feature elsewhere (wattpad?). However, that doesn't change anything, as people can get around it. That is part of why we have been asking a series of questions to each new member before they join. It is also why only registered members can read stories. I'm not sure if people are okay with the questions being asked; it's also taken up considerable time when people only answer part of the question (or worse, lie).

Thank you for your input. I agree; we have no ambition to be a forum, MJ history, MJ media, etc site. That's expensive, slows down the site, and often ends up looking shoddy depending on the browser. We don't need another forum when other established forums have that covered.

why do we have the print story option?  just curious.  as advised and should be clearer in the past week, every author should be responsible and highly encouraged to save their story on their own personal media(flash drives, emails, etc.).  I fully agree with the no chat.  it takes alot of monitoring and can lead to trouble.

- tinker13 on Jun 26, 2016 07:47 am

Unfortunately, even removing that option, people can simply go to their browser's print option and print the full story.

I would love to donate to keep the site operating efficiently!

I do have a few new ideas for the site. I love the challenges idea and please keep the MJ fanfiction awards. It attracted some of us to a lot of great stories on here! How often is it?

Also have you all every thought about starting a "Story of the Week" or "Story of the Month" to feature new stories or stories and feature the story's banner.
- KaraBeloved on Jun 26, 2016 05:52 pm

I've ran 2 contests since I became an admin; there hadn't been any for a couple years before then. I'm not sure how often we could run them before it becomes redundant.

Re: Story of the week / Story of the month. Noted - thank you. At the moment we've begun (finally!!!) changing up the "Featured" stories.

Thanks for your input

I love the idea of SOTM -- we're really excited to start doing that.

I think a donations option would be great -- financially RedOne and I are only able to do so much -- between us we can manage some fixes for some issues, but perhaps we can pitch in for some more userfriendly templates and template installations.

I agree with tinker13 about not wanting a one-stop website or a forum. This site has its purpose and other people can go elsewhere for all of those things. Maybe some option discussion areas, topic of the week RE: Michael to engage everyone.

I am up for fiction challenges, 1000 word challenges, maybe one per month? The winner might get their fiction featured and a winners graphic for their profile -- or similar?

- SkyWriter on Jun 27, 2016 02:28 am

For the fiction contests, how about an era challenge? For instances each month or every other month can be a different era; like a BAD era challenge and authors write a short fan Fic of that era? Just a thought.

Hello everyone,

Yes,it was definitely an intense situation around here with the site being offline. However, I must give credit to RedOne for her quick assistance and quick responses. Thank you once again!

I have no issue with members financially donating to the site for its upkeep and continued running. Times are hard for almost everyone, so I totally understand and am okay with this.

I look forward to reading what you ladies decide. 😆 Nice meeting you and RedOne again Skywriter!

One important thing which would be beneficial is updating the plugin that allows embedding videos in stories. Right now, Youtube no longer offers the option for the old embed code, and the standard one they have does not work here (tried a couple of times).

I have no problems donating every now and then from my PayPal account.

- femalien on Jun 27, 2016 12:52 pm

Thank you Annies_NOTokmj! It was great "meeting" you, too :)

Gabby - that's a definite possibility.

Femalien - Unfortunately, I don't see videos happening - they slow down the site. Plus, efiction is inherently buggy and I've yet to see an efic site successfully pull that off. You can link to offsite youtubes, though!

Update for everyone who wants to embed from Youtube! [LINK REMOVED]

- femalien on Jun 28, 2016 03:04 am

I just stated we do not want people embedding videos.
